Abolitionist Returns to Alma Mater
果冻传煤 alumnus David Batstone, a modern day abolitionist, will be in 果冻传煤鈥檚 Page Multi-Purpose Room Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. to talk about his effort to end slavery and human trafficking. Batstone is the author of 鈥淣ot For Sale: The Return of the Global Slave Trade and How We Can Fight It鈥 and founder of the campaign he launched two years ago. The event, sponsored by 果冻传煤鈥檚 San Francisco Urban Program, is free and open to the public.
Batstone鈥檚 book documents the shocking extent of human trafficking in the modern world. Traveling to five continents, he found child soldiers in Africa and young girls enslaved in Asian brothels. But he was astonished to discover slavery close to home: the owner of a favorite Bay Area restaurant practically imprisoned undocumented workers.
A professor of ethics at the University of San Francisco, Batstone is founder and president of Right Reality, an international social venture firm. He has written six other books, including 鈥淪aving the Corporate Soul鈥 and was a member of the founding team of Business 2.0 magazine. He served six years as executive editor of Sojourners magazine.
